ROME (Reuters) - Police said they were arresting 11 people in northern Italy on Friday to break up a network that recruited and trained Kurds for Turkey"s rebel Kurdistan Workers" Party (PKK).
The arrest warrants, being carried out in Venice and other northern towns, were issued against 10 Turkish citizens and one Italian, who have been charged with links to acts of international terrorism, police said in a statement.
The investigation, carried out in Italy and France, had discovered a "recruitment district" tasked with finding resources and people to fight against Turkish interests along the country"s border with Iraq, police said.
The PKK, which launched an armed campaign against the Turkish state in 1984 for a Kurdish homeland in southeastern Turkey, is branded a terrorist organization by Ankara, the European Union and the United States.
